About Course

๐Ÿ“ Course Title: Surveying and Mapping โ€“ Practical Applications in Construction

Code: 4031-CIV
Duration: 5 Weeks (30 contact hours)
Delivery: On-site Training + Lab Work + Project
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Field: Civil Engineering โ€“ Geomatics

๐Ÿ“Œ 1. Introduction

Surveying is the backbone of all civil engineering projects. From construction site layout to infrastructure development and urban planning, accurate measurement and mapping are essential for success. This course introduces participants to traditional and modern surveying techniques with a strong focus on practical skills using advanced tools such as Total Station and GPS.

๐Ÿ“„ 2. Course Description

This comprehensive 5-week course is designed to equip civil engineering students, technicians, and field engineers with both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise required for land surveying and topographic mapping. Through a combination of lectures, field exercises, and mapping software tutorials, participants will gain the ability to perform complete surveying operations relevant to real-world construction and infrastructure projects.

๐ŸŽฏ Objectives

  • Master the use of key surveying instruments such as Total Station and GPS.

  • Develop skills in topographic map creation and interpretation.

  • Apply surveying techniques to real-world construction and infrastructure projects.

๐Ÿงพ Course Content Outline (Week by Week)

Week 1: Introduction to Surveying Science

  • Topics:

    • History and importance of surveying in civil projects.

    • Basic surveying concepts: bearings, distances, levels.

    • Units of measurement and coordinate systems.

    • Types of surveys: land, topographic, construction layout.

  • Activities:

    • Group discussion on surveying roles in construction.

    • Simple chain and compass survey demo.

Week 2: Use of Modern Surveying Instruments (Total Station & GPS)

  • Topics:

    • Introduction to Total Station: setup, calibration, angle & distance measurement.

    • GPS surveying: satellite systems, types of GPS (RTK, DGPS).

    • Error sources and accuracy improvements.

  • Hands-on Training:

    • Fieldwork: performing topographic survey using Total Station.

    • Real-time data collection with GPS receivers.

    • Transferring and processing data to computer.

Week 3: Topographic Mapping

  • Topics:

    • Contour mapping and elevation models.

    • Data processing using AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar tools.

    • Creating cross-sections and profiles.

  • Lab Work:

    • Generate a digital topographic map.

    • Extract contours and calculate slopes/volumes.

Week 4: Surveying Applications in Construction & Road Works

  • Topics:

    • Construction staking and layout surveys.

    • Setting out foundations, columns, and road centerlines.

    • Monitoring deformation and site leveling.

  • Activities:

    • Case study: site layout for a small building.

    • Marking road alignment points using field data.

Week 5: Real-World Project โ€“ Field Survey and Map Generation

  • Objective: Perform a complete topographic and construction survey.

  • Tasks:

    • Select a small outdoor area or site.

    • Carry out a detailed survey using Total Station/GPS.

    • Process and analyze collected data.

    • Generate final maps and site reports.

  • Deliverables:

    • Field notes and coordinate files.

    • AutoCAD map with annotations.

    • Project report and team presentation.

๐Ÿงฐ Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of math and geometry.

  • Access to surveying tools: Total Station, GPS unit (or university lab).

  • Laptop with surveying/mapping software (e.g., Civil 3D, GIS tools).

๐ŸŽ“ Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Confidently operate Total Station and GPS equipment in the field.

  • Conduct a complete topographic survey and map generation process.

  • Interpret and produce surveying drawings relevant to civil construction.

  • Apply surveying techniques to site planning and infrastructure layouts.
